Memories from a study visit to Estonia

The study visit gave us an opportunity to see and listen to a number of innovative approaches to the promotion of lifelong learning. The promotion of lifelong learning on a regular tram route seemed both effective and particularly unusual. Andras staff decorated the tram with various advertising materials, while the colourful balloons made it even more attractive (see photograph). Friendly hostesses distributed promotional material and sweets to passengers. In the front of the tram, public figures took turns - with the help of a good sound system - to talk about themselves, their work and learning experiences. We watched a well-known director and an avant garde poet at work. Of course we couldn't understand them, as Estonian is far removed from any of our linguistic experience. We did notice that many passengers were browsing the materials and listening to the speakers with interest. Like our hosts, we want their idea at some future time to be an incentive to learn.
