Memories from a study visit to Estonia
I was in Estonia from 5 to 9 October 2011 as the adult learners representative in the Slovenian delegation. We learnt about Estonian methods for involving adults in education.
The thing I liked best was that they maintain old traditions (see photograph) and the architecture of the old historic town centre. It was encouraging that young people can learn about their cultural heritage and history. Much emphasis is placed on preserving crafts - crafts that are also dying out in Slovenia: pottery, ceramics, weaving, re-tailoring, metal working and others. As in Slovenia, the heritage and knowledge of older generations is woven into various forms of learning. Last year, in the Pragersko study circle we revived the winter tradition of knitting socks, and also worked on embroidery and weaving with corn husks. We gave samples to our hosts as souvenirs of the pleasant week we spent together.
I was though surprised to find young people maintaining and presenting all of these traditions, a very encouraging sign. It's not unusual to be served in a bar or a shop by a young woman in traditional costume.
I learnt many things on this journey that as a mentor I will be able to transfer to study circle participants and others as well.
